Certificate Course: Generative AI in Language Teaching

Much of the current debate centres on various AI tools and the experiences people have had using them in the classroom. telc AI experts Ms Christiane Carstensen and Dr Sonya Dase draw our attention to what really matters:

“A sound understanding of how generative AI actually generates texts and language is becoming a central professional foundation, particularly for language teachers. After all, language is not just our medium; it is our subject matter. Anyone working with AI must know what is happening ‘under the bonnet’ in order to make informed pedagogical decisions. AI does not simply lead to ‘more digitalisation’, but places greater emphasis on human-centred teaching. This is precisely where AI cannot replace human interaction: the joint negotiation of meaning, interaction and learning within a social context.
And whilst AI offers enormous potential in lesson preparation, it simultaneously transforms our teaching itself: it sharpens our awareness of what can only emerge through human interaction within the learning environment. AI also belongs in the classroom as a subject. After all, it is already shaping learners’ language and work routines and must be understood and explored as such.”
