If you already have a good basic knowledge of English, telc English B1 may be the right exam for you. It tests general language competence and can be taken by anyone.

For school pupils, we recommend telc English B1 School. For professional purposes, telc English B1 Business may be more appropriate. A
nd for people working in hotels and restaurants, we offer telc English B1 Hotel and Restaurant.

What can you do at level B1?

At level B1, you can communicate in a simple and connected way in everyday situations, when travelling and when talking about topics that are of personal interest. You can describe experiences, hopes and ambitions and give reasons for opinions. On the whole, you can use the most important grammatical structures correctly.

What is the structure of the examination?

The exam consists of a written and an oral part. The written exam lasts 2 hours and 30 minutes. Before the oral exam you have 20 minutes preparation time. The oral exam can take place on the day of the written exam or on another day.

What is expected from you in the examination?

You can find details of the exam in the telc English B1 mock examination. This is a complete test (with answer key) that you can try out at home or in your lessons. You can also read about the exam procedure and learn how the written test and oral performance are rated.

English Phrase Box

With telc flash cards, you always have the right words on hand. The English Phrase Box is based on the concept of a five-level flash card system; it allows you to learn vocabulary, sentence structure and common phrases in an effective and methodical way. The phrase box contains 64 flash cards with key phrases featured at level A2-B1, and the cards are helpful for everyday and classroom use as well as preparation for oral examinations. English Practice Material

This four volume set consists of one module each for the four skills Speaking, Listening, Reading and Writing. The target group is adult learners who are at CEFR competence levels B1 and B2. Each module contains 20 short units dealing with a specific emotion or feeling, such as happiness, anger, disappointment, curiosity, fear, nostalgia or surprise, and looks at it from different aspects. How can I prepare myself for the examination?

1. You can prepare by taking language courses or studying on your own. Many bookshops sell course books that prepare you specifically for the language level B1.

2. Familiarise yourself with the exam procedure and types of subtests in the telc English B1 examination. The mock examination and the learning objectives will help you with this.

Why does the B1 exam take longer than the B2 exam?

In the B1 exam, the listening texts are played twice.

Can I use a dictionary during telc English B1?


When can I take the examination?

Your telc examination centre offers examinations regularly, and centres can also offer exams on request. Please enquire at the centre to see when the next exam is scheduled. When you’re planning to take your exam, please note that your examination centre has to register the exam with telc 30 days before the exam date.

Where can I [they] take a telc examination?

Individuals can take exams at all telc-registered examination centres, including many adult education centres. Please be aware that some examination centres do not offer the entire telc programme. To find examination centres in your area, please click here.

How much does the examination cost?

Your examination centre will inform you about the exam fee. Because each examination centre is free to determine its own exam fees, telc cannot give you any cost-related details.

Can the examination be repeated?

Yes, exams can be repeated as often as you wish.  If you have failed just the oral exam or just the written exam, you do not need to take the whole examination again. You will find details on this under § 5 of the examination regulations.
