telc Deutsch C1 (Modified Format 2016) tests general German language competence at a very advanced level. The exam is suitable for adults who use German socially, professionally or academically in their studies.

What can you do at level C1?

At level C1 you can express yourself spontaneously and fluently. You are familiar with idiomatic phrases and can vary your style of language as appropriate. You can use the language with a high degree of grammatical accuracy.

What is the structure of the examination?

The exam consists of a written and an oral part. The written exam lasts 3 hours and 40 minutes (incl. a 20-minute break). Before the oral exam, you have 20 minutes of preparation time. The oral exam can take place on the day of the written exam or on another day.

What is expected from you in the examination?

You can find out the details of the exam by looking at the mock examination telc Deutsch C1 (Modified Format 2016). This is a complete test (with answer key), which you can try out at home or in your lessons. In addition, you can read about the exam procedure and how the written test and oral performance are rated.

You can download the mock examination and the relevant MP3 files here free of charge. The printed version and the Audio-CD are available in the telc shop.

How can I prepare myself for the examination?

1. You can prepare by taking language courses or studying on your own. Many bookshops sell course books that prepare you specifically for the language level C1.

2. Familiarise yourself with the exam procedure and types of subtests in the telc Deutsch C1 (Modified Format 2016) examination. The mock examination will help you with this.

When was the modified format telc Deutsch C1 introduced?

The modified format telc Deutsch C1 was developed in 2016 and it’s been open for registration since May 15, 2016. This examination replaces the old examination format telc Deutsch C1.

Is it still possible to register for the old format telc Deutsch C1?

The old format telc Deutsch C1 is being discontinued. It can, however, still be ordered for a limited amount of time until 30 June 2018. Please sign up your candidates for the new examination telc Deutsch C1 (modified format).

May I use a dictionary during telc Deutsch C1 (Modified Format 2016)?

No.

How does the examination telc Deutsch C1 (Modified format) differ from the existing format telc Deutsch C1?

The Written Examination including the subtests Reading, Listening and Writing was revised and shortened by 15 minutes. In the modified examination the parts 1-3 of Reading Comprehension are followed by Language Elements (multiple choice tasks). Listening/Part 2 now also contains multiple choice tasks. The subtest Writing offers candidates the possibility to choose between two topics, i.e. this subtest now only consists of one task.

Before the oral examination there is a preparation time of 20 minutes. The oral examination consists of a presentation (there are two topics to choose from) including a summary and follow-up questions, as well as a discussion about a given topic.

Are there any further changes in connection with the examination telc Deutsch C1 (Modified format)?

Yes, there will be a new answer sheet, please see page 29-37 and page 48 in Mock Examination 1.

What is new about the Answer Sheet S30?

On page 1 there is a box in which candidates enter the complete test version number. This number is found on the bottom left corner of the cover page of the test booklet S10. The different subtests are indicated with the same icons that are used in test booklets and mock examinations. This is to ensure that our answer sheet will be understood by candidates with different native languages. In the areas reserved for examiners and raters, text could not be avoided; therefore English terms are used here.

When can I take the examination?

Your telc examination centre offers examinations regularly, and centres can also offer exams on request. Please enquire at the centre to see when the next exam is scheduled. When you’re planning to take your exam, please note that your examination centre has to register the exam with telc 30 days before the exam date.

Where can I take a telc examination?

Individuals can take exams at all telc-registered examination centres, including many adult education centres. Please be aware that some examination centres do not offer the entire telc programme. To find examination centres in your area, please click here.

How much does the examination cost?

Your examination centre will inform you about the exam fee. Because each examination centre is free to determine its own exam fees, telc cannot give you any cost-related details.

How long does it take to receive the telc certificate?

About 80% of the certificates are sent out to the examination centre three weeks after the completed exam documents have been received at the telc head office in Frankfurt.

Can the examination be repeated?

Yes, the exam can be repeated as often as you wish. If you have failed just the oral exam or just the written exam, you do not need to take the whole examination again. You will find details on this under § 5 of the examination regulations.
