Why study for a language certificate?

You’re pretty confident that you speak good English, your teacher would agree, and your friends and colleagues think so too. So what’s the use of a piece of paper telling you the same thing? Many people would say they speak English well – and they often do – but from the point of view of a prospective employer, educational establishment or governmental body, for example, simply stating that your English is good is no longer enough.

Beyond what you claim that you can do on your CV, how can you convince the company that you would like to work for that you have the English skills required to communicate successfully in a professional environment? How can you support your application to study at a university in an English-speaking country where the language requirements are high? And what if you’d like to go and live on a long-term basis in the UK, USA or Australia, to mention just a few of the places where English is an official language?

In the modern day, all of these situations require that your English language capabilities are certified according to an internationally recognised standard. While your English teacher or language school can write you a glowing report and issue an impressive-looking piece of paper attesting to your abilities, this is not usually sufficient for official purposes.

If you want to really show what you do in English, a telc certificate presents a good option. telc GmbH – The European Language Certificates provides certification in nine different languages in accordance with the Council of Europe’s Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. These are officially recognised by a range of establishments throughout Europe and beyond and can open the door to travel, career progress, further education and more.
