Learning through literature

As the temperature drops and the winter nights start to draw in, what better way to relax than by curling up with a good book?  If that book happens to be in another language, however, do you feel any differently about reading it?

Reading literature in English may present quite a challenge for some learners, but it can be an excellent way to consolidate your studies and see authentic language in use. Grammar and vocabulary encountered in a learning environment can often make a lot more sense in a real context: you can take the time to focus on words or structures of interest and strengthen your overall feeling for the language as you progress.

A good place to start is with a book that you have already read in your own language. You will know the plot and characters and therefore be able to ‘fill the gaps’ with any vocabulary that is not familiar. Children’s literature, such as Harry Potter, or graded readers written with learners in mind are also a nice way to approach reading in English for the first time.

One of the most important habits to avoid is feeling the need to look up every word you don’t know. It’s best to aim for a general understanding; perhaps going to the dictionary only for elements that crop up on a regular basis. Remember that reading in any language should be an enjoyable and rewarding experience – just think of the sense of satisfaction when you turn the last page!
